Thirteen Random Things In My Head

1) I started watching the final season of QAF this week. It came out on DVD a few weeks ago and since I don’t have cable I’ve had to wait to see it. I love, love, love this show and I almost didn’t want to start this last season because as long as I don’t watch it then it can’t really be over, right? This time last year I was driving up Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh, but I should note that I did not see Emmett standing on the corner dressed in glitter and pink fur. I forgive you Emmett, you’re still the best gal pal a girl could have!

2) My daughter loves to make cards and notes and pass them out to friends and family. She’ll use any excuse to make something up, even an invitation to a impromptu dance at Hogwarts (aka the living room). This week she gave me the best note I can imagine, a Picasso version of the words “I love you” complete with a rainbow and 4 hearts on the reverse.

3) I tried on fifteen bridesmaid dresses before finding one that fit right and looked good. Have I mentioned that I love my best friend, a.k.a. the bride, who let me find the perfect dress instead of asking me to wear something from the crypt of bridezilla? And that she patiently helped me in and out of those fifteen dresses in a suffocatingly stuffy dressing room when she certainly had other things to be doing on a Saturday afternoon?

4) Among other things, I am currently reading a book by a pair of my favorite suspense authors, Lincoln Child & Douglas Preston. It’s called Brimstone and it’s the first in a trilogy. DH is also reading it. He’s nearing the end and is barely able to contain himself, he really wants to tell me what happens. If he utters a single word I’ll bury him in the backyard next to that annoying door-to-door salesman.

5) My father made the best boneless bbq ribs ever when we went in for a visit recently. Smoked to perfection and then braised on the grill, they were delicious. When he first told me about the dinner plans I wasn’t so thrilled, I mean I am not a bbq girl. I said, “Ummm… do you remember the way that Sally eats in the movie When Harry Met Sally? Yeah, that’s me.” To which he replied, “Well, this is going to be a different love story, called When Susan Met Ribs.” And he was right.

6) We are offering free hay to anyone who’d like to come mow our grass. Seriously, folks, it’s a jungle out there. It seems like we’re only able to make it up to our currently-under-renovation would-be-home about once a week to mow. And with the current combination of daily rain and sunshine, we’ve got a bit of a situation on our hands. I think we should consider buying a goat to tether in the yard.

7) I can only shake my head sadly at Britney’s last desperate attempt to be taken seriously. First there was the waterworks show on NBC, and now she is posing nude ala pregnant Demi Moore. I don’t get this girl, I mean what is going on inside her head? Who convinced her this would be a good idea? And to top this off, she’s using her celebrity power to champion life-changing, worthy causes like Save the Penny. Her public relations manager needs to be fired and fast.

8) I have really enjoyed getting to know my fellow homeschooling bloggers over the past few weeks. It’s a wonderful community here at Homeschool Journal and I’m glad to be a part of it. I dig the fact that although we come from different backgrounds and live various lifestyles, we each have something valuable to contribute, we all have sprinkles of wisdom and insight worth sharing. I’ve read some really great posts during my browsing and I hope that others have gotten something out of mine as well.

9) I miss being in the mountains. I particularly miss the place where I attend Womenspirit, located high in the mountains of NC. I am totally hooked on the reverent wonderfulness of the forest. I’d like nothing more than to sit quietly and admire nature’s handiwork everyday. I never thought I’d see the day where I wanted to live in a little log cabin in the woods. What is the world coming to?

10) I make the best guacamole ever, at least according to my tastes, lol. Take 3 avocados, one small red onion, some sea salt, lime juice, garlic powder, and Vegenaise (or mayo). Slice the avocados in half, scoop out the inside and mash it up with a whisk. Chop the onion into little pieces (a handichopper works well for this). Mix everything else in, gradually adding more until it’s suitable to your taste. I use lots of lime and garlic. Grab a bag of white corn chips and dig in!

11) I am a true-blue night owl. I’ve tried being a morning person, I’ve desperately wanted to be a morning person. But I’ve accepted that it just isn’t going to happen for me. Some of my friends bounce out of bed at 5am and greet the sun. I would have to have a gun to my head to get up at that hour. I enjoy being up late, evening is my best time. I blame this on having been born in Alaska where my parents had to cover the windows with aluminum foil so we could sleep at night when there was constant daylight. It totally wrecked my internal clock.

12) I am fascinated with my new camera. I love it so much I take pictures of stuff I don’t even like. I went to the store today and left it at home and I immediately got the sensation that something was missing, like those dreams where you find out that you’ve gone to school without your underwear. I am determined to learn how to use all the features before it becomes obsolete.

13) I can’t believe it’s the end of June. It seems like just yesterday it was April and I was making my mental wish list for summer. Now here I am smack dab in the middle of it wondering if I’ll get any of it accomplished. When I was a kid I remember watching a news report about NASA planning for a shuttle launch in 1988, which was still 2 years away. That felt like an absolute eternity. It’s all about perspective I guess. Back then 2 years was equivalent to a fifth of my life; no wonder it seemed like an incredibly long time.

  • Welcome to the T13!! Loved yours, and yum your quacamole sounds good!!

  • Great list! I’m a night-owl, too, but I was born in PA, so I have no excuse!

  • I had to LOL at number 10. There are lots of things that I make just the way “I” like them. And that’s okay, because I’m the one making it (and eating it!). Mine is up–first time!

  • I’m a night owl, too. My best ideas come at 2 a.m. But then my brain doesn’t work at 10 a.m. when I’m at work. :)

  • I can’t believe it’s the end of June either! My older son just turned eight!

  • I am not a morning person either, which is really hard because I have kids that are.

  • #7, I don’t get her either!
    Love guacamole, that sounds good!
    My TT is up.

  • We lived in a log cabin in the woods on three acres on a mountaintop in PA just a short six months (long story why it was so short). We had only a strip to mow around the house; everything else was woods, and more woods on top of that . . . it was really hunting territory, although people lived all up and down the road.

It was the most serene and peaceful time of my life! And it came at a very opportune time for me as I was able to fully cycle through a grieving process I had not yet embraced. Great, great home! (And, the easiest by far to upkeep!)

Of course, there was a time when I realized a snake was perched on the tree branch over my head as I swung the children. We saw a mountain lion one night next to a tree, with our poor house cat on the other side of the tree, thinking “where have you brought me?!” But, we went to sleep with the sounds of “camping” all night, and a whipperwill call that we loved. No air-conditioning; but always pleasant.

    Okay, enough reminiscing :-)

  • I know what you mean about it being the end of June - the kids start back to school at the end of August! I still haven’t felt like we’ve settled into summer and it’s nearly half over already! Waa!

  • I’m a night owl too .. in fact I haven’t even been to bed yet! mmmm that guacomole sounds pretty good. :)

I’m with you on #9, the forest is one of my favorite places to walk the dogs. I especially love it at the end of a really hot day when you can smell the pine needle.
