1930’s Classics

Madeline

MADELINE
[ by Ludwig Bemelmans ]

Originally published in 1939, this was one of my favorite books when I was growing up. I just loved Madeline; she was curious, daring, and brave. My kids have really enjoyed reading this book, too. The text is suitable for early readers and the drawings are priceless. I especially like the movement shown in the illustrations, particularly when Miss Clavel runs faster and faster to see what’s wrong. - 44 pgs -

The Story Of Ferdinand

THE STORY OF FERDINAND
[ by Munro Leaf ]

Although this book was published in 1936 I didn’t run across it until recently, but Ferdinand stole my heart just the same. He’s just a peaceful bull who likes sitting under the cork tree and spends his days smelling the flowers. He isn’t concerned with what everyone else is doing and he certainly has no interest in running around snorting and butting heads with the other bulls. A very cute book about following your own path in life. - 70 pgs -

A few other beloved titles originally published in the 1930’s:

  • Angus and the Ducks, by Marjorie Flack
  • The Story of Babar, by Jean de Brunhoff
  • The Five Chinese Brothers, by Claire Bishop
  • And To Think That I Saw It, by Dr. Suess
  • Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, by Virginia Lee Burton

  • Oooh, I have many of these. I was lucky to know Ferdinand when I was a child, so my children grew up with him as a known. We actually have a cat that we nickname Ferdinand because he loves just laying and sleeping under the flowers in the garden.

I had The Story of Babar as a child . . . the whole series, and also Mike Mulligan, so again, my children grew up with these :-)

    Good books!
